The responsibilities and background of teachers changes with the needs of society. Teachers over the past
three hundred have continued to be impacted by societal, political, and industrial changes. In the Middle
Ages, textbooks were at the center of education and teachers also were playing a role in clarifying content in
text. Schools were reorganized to reflect industry, with grades, standard textbooks, and specialized teachers.
Education is increasingly important to the success of both individuals and nations in contemporary society,
and growing evidence demonstrates that, among all educational resources, teachers’ abilities are especially
crucial contributors to students’ learning. In previous decades, teachers were expected to prepare only a small
minority for ambitious intellectual work, whereas today they are expected to prepare virtually all students for
higher-order thinking and levels of performance once reserved for only a few. |
