İstatistiğin temel amacı belirlenen bir konu hakkında örnek veriler elde etmek ve bu verilerden hareketle ilgili konu hakkında genelleme yapmaktır. Böylece bir örneklem üzerindeki çalışma ile araştırılan konunun bütün evreni hakkında tahmin yürütülebilir. Araştırmalarda ele alınan konuya ilişkin veriler her zaman sayısal değerler olmayabilir. Bazı durumlarda iki seçenekli cevaplardan oluşan veriler olabileceği gibi, seviye olarak artan veya eşit düzeyli seçeneklerden de oluşabilmektedir. Kategorik veri olarak adlandırılan bu tür verilere birçok örnek verilebilir. Bir hastalığın tedavi metodu sonucunda hasta ölmüştür veya yaşıyordur. Bir öğrencinin mezuniyet programı sözel, sayısal veya eşit ağırlık olabilir. Kategorik verilerin analizinde farklı istatistik yöntemler kullanılmaktadır. Bu yöntemlerden biri de lojistik regresyon analizidir. Sigara içme durumu da kategorik veri örneğidir. Bir kişi sigara içiyordur veya içmiyordur. Sigara, vücuda zarar veren çok sayıda madde içermekte olup, birçok hastalığa neden olmaktadır. Kanser, kalp ve akciğer hastalıkları gibi birçok ölümcül hastalığa yol açmasına rağmen yıllardan beri yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır. Böylesine zararlı bir alışkanlıktan kişileri kurtarmak ve toplumda yaygınlaşmasını önlemek gerekmektedir. Bunun için kişileri sigara içmeye yönelten faktörlerin belirlenmesi önemlidir. Bu çalışmada lojistik regresyon modeli kullanılarak İnönü Üniversitesi idari personelinin sigara içme olasılıklarını belirleyen etmenler üzerinde durulmuştur. Analizler SPSS paket programı kullanılarak yapılmıştır.
The main purpose of statistics is to obtain sample data about a specific issue and to make generalization about this issues through these data. Thus, it might be possible to make a guess about the whole universe of the researched issue through the study conducted on a sample. The data related to the issue taken into consideration in the research may not always be numerical values. In some cases data may be composed of multiple choice answers, but it may also consist of increasing or equal level options too. Numerous examples can be given to this kind of data called as categorical data. A patient is either dead or alive in the end of a treating method for a disease. A student's graduation program may be verbal, quantitative or equal weight. Different statistical methods are used in the analysis of categorical data. One of these methods is the logistic regression analysis. Smoking status is an example of categorical data. A person is either a smoker or non-smoker. Smoking contains a large number of damaging agents to the body, and causes many diseases. Although it has caused many fatal diseases such as cancer, heart and lung diseases, it has been widely used for many years. It is necessary to refrain people from such a harmful habit and to prevent the spread of it in the community. For this reason, it is important to determine the factors that lead people to smoking. In this study, the focus is on the factors determining the probability of smoking incidence of Inonu University administrative staff by using logistic regression model. Analyses have been performed using SPSS package program.
