Abstract:
Nanoparticle drug delivery has gained great attention in the past few decades due to the unique properties of nanoparticles, such as compatibility with biological membranes, designable surface, suitability for targeting, and applicability for different routes. This chapter discusses some nanocarrier systems used for nasal application and their in vitro and in vivo analyses to predict nose-to-brain delivery. The impact of nanotechnology on drug delivery gave us the opportunity to deliver active substances to the desired region with lower side effects and better treatment. Permeability studies can give respective information about drug transfer through the epithelium or about the impact of an excipient on drug permeability. Histopathological studies were carried out on sheep nasal mucosa to evaluate any impairment on integrity of the nasal mucosa after permeation studies. Due to their properties such as small size and proper surface modification to enhance the nasal transport of drugs through the olfactory mucosa, nanodelivery systems promise a potent alternative for treatment of diseases. © 2022 Jenny Stanford Publishing Pte.
