Rivâyetlerin zamanları aşarak günümüze ulaşmasında yazının kullanımı önemli bir tartışma konusudur. Kaynaklarımızda konuyla ilgili leh ve aleyhte çok sayıda rivâyet mevcuttur. Rivâyetlerden kaynaklanan farklı uygulama ve kabuller hadis kitâbeti ile ilgili yaklaşımları çeşitlendirerek konuya son noktanın konulmasını güçleştirmiştir. Arap toplumunda yazının gelişimini, kullanım alanlarını, insan ve coğrafya ile girmiş olduğu etkileşimin sonucunda bıraktığı izleri tespit etmeden konuyla ilgili tatmin edici bilgiler vermek mümkün değildir. Yapılan araştırmalara göre cahiliye döneminde kullanılan yazı dilinin kaynağı Ârâmîceden türeyen Nebât alfabesidir. Kullanılan alfabenin şekilsel özellikleri, üzerine yazı yazılan malzemelerin tercihini de etkilemiş ve zamanın tahrip edici etkisi karşısında direnci düşük olan malzemeler kullanılmıştır. Arap toplumunda yazı çok gelişmiş bir kültürel öğe olmasa da varlığı bilinmeyen ve kullanılmayan bir unsur değildir. Hicri birinci yüzyılda yazı hadis kitabetine imkân veren bir seviyededir. Hicrî birinci yüzyılda sahâbe ve tâbiûnun kitâbetle ilgili tutumları farklılık arz etmektedir. Konuya olumlu yaklaşıp yazılı ürün verenler olduğu gibi, olumsuz yaklaşıp yasaklayıcı bir tavır sergileyenler de vardır. Ancak müspet yaklaşanlar, menfi yönde tavrı alanlardan kat kat fazladır. Arap toplumunda hâkim olan sözlü kültürün etkisiyle çok kullanılmayan yazı, İslâm Devleti'nin teşekkülü ile beraber zorunlu bir gereklilik olarak zamanla gelişmiştir. Hz. Peygamber döneminde ortaya çıkan hadis kitâbeti olgusu, yazının gelişimi ile aynı paralelde bir seyir izleyerek, giderek yaygınlık kazanmıştır. Tedrici bir seyirle gelişen hadis kitâbeti, hicrî birinci yüzyıldan sonra sistematik bir hal alsa da bu yüzyılın sınırları içindeki varlığı itibariyle; inkâr edilmeyecek kadar belirgin, görmezden gelinmeyecek kadar yaygın, yazılı ürün verebilecek kadar işlevseldir.
The use of writing in the transmission of the narratives over time is an important subject of discussion. In our sources, there are many narrations for and against the subject. Different practices and assumptions arising from the narrations have diversified the approaches about the hadith scripture but made it difficult to reach a consensus on the subject. It is not possible to give satisfactory information on the subject without identifying the development of writing in Arab society, its areas of use, and the traces it left as a result of its interaction with people and geography. According to the researches, the source of the written language used in the period of jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic age of ignorance) is the Nebat alphabet derived from Aramaic. The stylistic features of the alphabet used also affected the choice of materials for writing, and the materials with a low resistance to the destructive effect of time were used. Although writing is not a highly developed cultural element in Arab society, it is not an unknown and unused element. In the first century of Hijri, writing was at a level that allowed hadith scripture. During this period, the attitudes of the Companions and the followers towards the script differed. While some people have a positive approach to the subject and give written products, some approach it negatively and display a prohibitive attitude against written scripture. However, those who approach positively are many times more than those who take a negative attitude. Due to the influence of the dominant oral culture, writing was not a common way of communication in the Arap society, but it had developed over time as a necessity with the establishment of the Islamic State. The phenomenon of hadith scripture emerged in the period of the Hz. Prophet and it had become increasingly common with the development of writing. Although the hadith scripture developed gradually and became systematic after the first century of Hijri, in terms of its existence within this period; it was too obvious to be denied, too common to be ignored, and functional enough to produce a written product.
