Şehir tarihi ile ilgili araştırmalar, Osmanlı Devleti'nin siyasi tarihi, teşkilatı ve ekonomisi hakkında bilgi verdiğinden son dönemlerde önem kazanmıştır. Çünkü şehirler, her dönemde hangi kültür çevresinde olursa olsunlar kendi toplumlarının uygarlık düzeyini yansıtırlar. Şehir tarihlerine bakılarak toplumların idarî, iktisadî, sosyal ve kültürel gelişmelerini izleyerek devletin yapısı hakkında fikir yürütmek mümkündür. Söz konusu şehre sahip olan devletler, şehrin kültür yönünden gelişmesine büyük katkı sağlarken; doğu ile batı geçiş güzergâhında bulunmasından dolayı ticari olarak da aktif rol oynamıştır. Ayrıca çok eski zamanlardan bu yana Malatya'da Müslüman nüfusun yanında farklı din ve mezheplere sahip gayr-i Müslim nüfus hep bulunmuştur.
